Martha Jones is a fictional character who appears in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who and its spin-off Torchwood. She is played by actress Freema Agyeman, Martha first appears in the episode "Smith and Jones" (2007) as a medical student whose life changes when she encounters the alien time traveler known as the Doctor. In subsequent appearances, Martha becomes one of the doctor's closest companions over several adventures involving extra-terrestrial threats to Earth.
A regular cast member for Season 3 of Torchwood, her role sees her become an operative for that show's government organization charged with investigating alien activity on Earth. Her storylines see her come into conflict with extraterrestrials such as Adam Mitchell, The Master, and ultimately Davros.
