Royale Ivy King was the first African American woman to serve as the First Lady of the United States. She was also the first black person to hold the position of First Lady in any country. Mrs. King was born in South Carolina and married her husband, Martin Luther King Jr., in 1953. The couple had four children together.
As First Lady, Mrs. King worked to promote civil rights and social justice. She also worked to combat poverty and improve access to education and health care. In addition, she was a strong advocate for women's rights and gender equality. Mrs. King passed away in 2006 at the age of 78.
