Harrison Jr. was born in Los Angeles, California, to actress Kelvin Harrison and producer Kelvin Harrison Sr. He has two siblings, actress Jurnee Smollett-Bell and actor Jason Harrison. He began his acting career appearing in commercials and making guest appearances on series like Dawson's Creek and ER before landing his breakout role as Greg Jennings on the television series My So-Called Life. In 2004, he made his feature film debut in the drama Mean Creek opposite Kate Hudson and Liev Schreiber, for which he was nominated for a Young Artist Award.
